The Vista Project

Reclaiming the view and creating a home designed for the life they’ve earned.

Meet The Client

Perched on a steep hillside in the Villagio neighborhood of southwest Rapid City, this modern home offered incredible potential, if you knew where to look.

While the property featured dramatic topography and sweeping views of the city and foothills beyond, much of that potential was hidden behind challenging grades, limited usable space, and a hillside that restricted both access and visibility.

The homeowners envisioned more than a finished yard. They wanted an outdoor environment that felt as intentional as the home itself. A place to relax, entertain, connect with nature, and fully enjoy the remarkable setting surrounding them.

The Vista Project Site Planning and Surveying

The Challenges

Significant elevation changes existed throughout the property, from the steep driveway approach to the dramatic grade transitions surrounding the home.

Large portions of the site felt disconnected, limiting access, reducing usable space, and creating long-term concerns related to safety and erosion.

At the same time, every improvement needed to enhance the property without sacrificing the expansive views that made the location so special.

How Bluegrass Delivered

A series of carefully integrated retaining walls transformed steep grades into functional outdoor living areas while creating structure and continuity throughout the property.

Along the driveway, a custom steel-backed timber guardrail improved safety and confidence during winter conditions. In the backyard, black steel and cedar railings provided protection along dramatic drop-offs while preserving unobstructed sightlines.

One of the most significant transformations came through the excavation and reshaping of a hillside along the northwest portion of the property. By removing a substantial portion of the slope and constructing a retaining wall along the northern boundary, the team was able to dramatically expand usable lawn space while opening views that had previously been hidden from the home.

The result is a landscape that feels larger, more connected, and more inviting, a property that fully embraces the setting that drew the homeowners there in the first place.

Our Favorite Features

The Pond Beside the Patio

The Vista Project Pond Water Feature

Originally planned elsewhere on the property, the koi pond was ultimately positioned directly adjacent to the primary outdoor living space. The result is transformative. The sounds of moving water, reflections on the surface, and daily activity of the koi become part of everyday life rather than a destination elsewhere in the landscape.

The View Restoration

The Vista Project Overlook Fencing

Excavating and reshaping the hillside unlocked one of the project’s most dramatic transformations. What was once a visual barrier became an opportunity to reveal expansive views of Rapid City and the foothills beyond.

The Modern Pool Terrace

The Vista Project Completed Custom Patio

A Techo-Bloc Hexa patio paired with horizontal cedar privacy fencing creates a contemporary outdoor retreat that complements the architecture of the home while providing a comfortable space for gathering and relaxation.

The Terraced Retaining Walls

The Vista Project Pond Excavation

Stepped retaining walls solve complex grade challenges while guiding movement throughout the property. Beyond their function, they add rhythm, structure, and visual interest to the landscape.

The Expanded Lawn

The Vista Project Expanded Lawn Space

By reclaiming space from the hillside, the project created a generous lawn area that feels both natural and highly functional, providing flexibility for recreation, entertaining, and everyday enjoyment.
