Paver Patio in the Black Hills with Custom Tiling

Our Hardscaping is Built for Black Hills Soils and Winters

The ground in the Black Hills works against anything built on it. Clay-heavy soils swell when they are wet and shrink when they dry. Spring snowmelt saturates the ground, and dozens of freeze-thaw cycles each winter push up on whatever sits above it. When a patio is built on a thin base, or a wall has nowhere to drain, you see it within a few years: pavers heave, joints open, steps settle, and walls start to lean.

We build every hardscape from the ground up. We excavate to the depth the site actually needs, install and compact base material in lifts, and set grades so water moves away from the structure and your foundation. The finished surface gets locked in with professional edge restraints and polymeric sand. When a wall needs an engineered design, we bring in an engineer and handle the permit.

What Makes Our Work Different?

True to the Land. Built for Life Lived Outdoors

Be Happy With Your Hardscape Long After It's Installed

Two patios might look identical when they’re first finished, but after five winters, the difference shows. This comes down to the parts of the job you can’t see once the project is done. Our process starts before we dig. We walk around your property to check the slope, soil, drainage, utilities, and nearby buildings. Building a wall for a flat patio is different from building one to hold back a slope, so we design with that in mind. Next, we dig to the right depth and build the base your site needs.

When freezing and thawing happen, water can damage patios and walls. That’s why we slope surfaces for proper runoff, install drain tile, clean the stone, use filter fabric behind retaining walls, and fix the grading above and below each structure so water goes where it should. Once the main work is done, we add the finishing touches. We cut the pavers to fit, secure them with edge restraints, and finish with polymeric sand. We set wall courses with the right setback and interlock, then cut and attach the capstones for a clean edge. Before we wrap up, we walk through the finished project with you and check every detail against the original plans.

Find The Best Fit For Your Hardscaping

Most Bluegrass Landscape projects combine several of our services together. Picture a conversation pit with a seat wall and fire feature, or a retaining wall that creates a flat yard for your new paver patio. Everything gets designed and built as one connected space by one experienced crew.

Paver
Patios

Concrete, natural stone, and porcelain pavers are laid over the base system your site calls for, whether that is a traditional aggregate base, an open-graded system, or base panels. Pavers flex with the seasons instead of cracking like a slab.

Retaining
Walls

Segmental block and natural boulder walls for grade changes, erosion control, and terraced yards. Drain tile, clean stone, and filter fabric go behind every wall, and walls over four feet are engineered.

Fire
Features

Wood-burning and gas fire pits, fire tables, and outdoor fireplaces, with gas line permitting handled when required.

Outdoor Living Spaces

Multi-zone patios with seat walls, cooking and dining areas, and room to gather, built as one connected space instead of separate projects.
