The Story Behind
Bluegrass Landscape Co.
Outdoor Spaces Built the Way They Should Be
Most homeowners don’t hire a landscape contractor because they want a patio, retaining wall, or sprinkler system. They hire one because they want to enjoy their property more.
They want a backyard where the family gathers. A patio that feels like an extension of the home. A landscape that adds beauty, function, and value instead of creating problems a few years down the road.
At Bluegrass Landscape Co., that’s what we build.
Since 2007, we’ve helped hundreds of Black Hills homeowners transform ordinary yards into outdoor spaces that are built to last and designed to be enjoyed for years to come. Whether it’s a custom paver patio, retaining wall, outdoor lighting system, water feature, or a complete property transformation, our standard is simple:
Build it right. Don’t cut corners. Solve problems completely. Create spaces people love coming home to.
Why Homeowners Choose Bluegrass
For many homeowners, hiring a contractor can feel like a gamble. You think, “Will they show up? Will they communicate? Will they do what they promised? Will the finished project actually last?” Those concerns are understandable.
That’s why we’ve built our company around a few simple principles:
- We do what we say.
- We tell the truth, even when it’s not the easy answer.
- We solve the hard parts instead of cutting corners.
- We build it right the first time.
We’re craftsmen at heart, and we believe quality work still matters.

Serving Rapid City and the Black Hills
Proudly Serving the Black Hills Region
The Black Hills are beautiful, but they can also be tough on landscapes. Steep grades, clay soils, drainage challenges, freeze-thaw cycles, and unpredictable weather all require thoughtful planning and proper installation.
Because this is where we live and work, we understand those challenges firsthand. Our projects are designed and built specifically for local conditions, not copied from a national template or adapted from another region.
When we recommend a solution, it’s because we believe it’s the right solution for your property.
Meet the Masters
Ryan Chocholousek
Owner
Born and raised on a 100+ year old family farm north of Gregory, South Dakota, Ryan grew up watching his dad and grandfather tend the land and care for livestock. He learned early that success comes from hard work, keeping your word, and helping others when you can.
After attending both the University of Oregon and Oregon State University, Ryan built a career in the golf course industry, working his way from intern to Golf Course Superintendent at several respected clubs throughout the western United States before returning home to South Dakota.
Today, Ryan lives in Rapid City with his wife, Kelly, and their two children, Charlie and Cora. When he’s not helping clients improve their properties, you’ll usually find him exploring the Black Hills with his family or working on another outdoor project of his own.
Ben Clark
Project Manager
They say to surround yourself with good people, and we feel like we hit the jackpot when Ben joined the team. A Rapid City native, Ben oversees day-to-day operations and serves as the guy everyone turns to when a challenge needs solving.
His experience spans everything from carpentry and masonry to plumbing, electrical work, fabrication, and troubleshooting complex project details. Ben is a graduate of Rapid City Stevens High School and the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.
He and his wife Cari have three children, Alivia, Grant, and Hudson, which means much of his free time is spent driving from one activity to the next. When he gets the chance, you’ll find him camping, fishing, mountain biking, or spending time with family.
A Commitment To Learning
Landscape construction is constantly evolving. New products, installation methods, lighting systems, irrigation technology, and construction techniques emerge every year. That’s why our team participates in ongoing training throughout the year.
We invest in manufacturer training, installation workshops, industry education programs, and hands-on product demonstrations to stay current with best practices and new technologies. Many of the products we install require specialized installation methods to perform as intended. We take the time to learn those systems properly so our clients receive the full benefit of the products they’ve invested in.
We believe learning never stops, and neither does our commitment to improving our craft.
